Q.  What's the best choice to clean the solder paste off a mis-printed board?

A.

Cleaning misprints is a common situation and a time-consuming one. In general, if you just have a few boards to do, the presaturated wipe products are the best choice.

MicroCare's Economy Wipes, featuring MultiClean™,  have been formulated to simplify cleaning of misprints. This cleaner is very effective on most all solder pastes and fluxes. Mild and skin-safe, it easily removes organic and ionic residues, light oils and other contaminants. It leaves no residues and is safe for people: it’s the only product on the market with a calculated Personal Exposure Limit greater than 1,000 ppm.

The presaturated wipes feature the popular “slam-shut” lid, which extends shelf life even when the package has been opened. This clever, customeroriented and money-saving feature eliminates dried-out wipes. In addition, the Economy Wipes also are available in money-saving refills which typically reduce costs 25% or more. The wipes are made of ultra-clean, 100% hydroentagled polyester which will not lint or shred, making them an excellent choice for stencils and misprints.

But if the volumes are higher, you need more cleaning horsepower. Try the BGA Stencil Cleaner (#MCC-BGA). This product blends safe, nonflammable water-based ingredients with aggressive, proprietary alcohols. The result is a powerful cleaner which is ideal for bare boards, as well as the stencils, frames, and even the stencil printer itself. It removes all types of solder pastes — including lead-free materials — plus epoxies and some inks. Slow-drying, use compressed air to blow bits of solder paste out of clogged vias on the boards; the strong solvent will soften the solder paste and make cleaning faster and more consistent.

The Stencil Cleaner is optimized for room temperature cleaning; it has almost no aroma and the tack-time has been optimized for stencil cleaning. It delivers excellent results in ultrasonic systems and dip tanks because it is a nonfoaming cleaner, unlike many other water-based products.

One other thought – if you’re getting a lot of misprints (more than 2-3 per hour at normal production speeds) then the problem isn’t the cleaning, it’s the root cause of what’s causing the misprints. More often than not, it’s ineffective cleaning from the stencil wiping paper. Better paper will give better wiping, which can dramatically reduce misprints and defects at functional test. One such stencil wiping paper, the MicroWipe FP paper from MicroCare, has been proven to boost yield as much as 82%, generating huge savings in rework, throughput and improved yields.
